Report from dash point participants:

We had a great turnout considering there was only one loop open. Good thing
there were some early arrivals to strategically position occupancy. I had a
quilt class on Friday so left home on Thursday and Patch the 78 Riviera got
us to the park about 4pm and after driving around about 8 times finally found
a site with a flat large area for the campfire. You would think with only a
choice of 35 sites it shouldn't have been so hard! Got all set up and Jetta
managed to find her way unattended into the woods with in 2 minutes of arrival.
(I am not sure what she finds so great about Dash Point foliage but fortunately
this time she was just sitting on a log in the campsite when I discovered her
absence!)

Dan Simmons our illustrious web master from Renton got there by 6 and set up
in a triple site so we could at least assure that grouping and got his tent
and awning out. I think just for effect since it certainly was crystal clear
both nights and sunny all day! Dave and Erica from Eugene pulled in late
after a long drive in their 67 Westy. they spread us out a little farther and
will be new WetWesties. This was their first experience with us and I don't
think we scared them off they picked up a bumper sticker on Sunday so now I'll
recognize them in the Oregon hood.

Saturday morning came and brought us Brian Wood from Kent and his son Chris
after piano lessons to check out the spaces and make arrangements to return.
Brian has a 77 chrome yellow Westy. Kevin also came out for the pre-check
about the same time from his new abode in Kent with his 63 panel. Both left
and came back bearing wood for our campfire. Was a great sunny afternoon but
definitely fall chilly. After seeing and hearing about the insulated interior
wraps for the westy vanagon pop tops I had purchased a 24" roll of foiled bubble
wrap insulation thinking it would work in my riviera too. While I looked at
my pop top I took the 25' roll and just tucked it up under my flat roof overhang
and walked it around the pop top. it fit perfectly height and length with a
one foot overlap that I secured with spring clips. No taping or cutting needed
and there could still be a little air exchange by having access to my zippers
from the inside. Warmer Saturday night too, so a super simple application for
those superior Rivieras out there! Total cost $19.99. And it rolls back up
to about 14" diameter roll. Unfortunately my other hopeful repairs were all
with negative results. My door rail is going to stay 'broken' and my lack of
dash lights as discovered by Steve and Dan is a result of my wonderful workers
in Albequerque not putting my dash light bulb holder back in when they wired
my oil temp. So back to the drawing board. So it was surely time to fix food
and start the fire again.

Chuck and Beth Luce from Burien came in their 76 chrome yellow Westy that he
rescued from Connecticut and looks really nice. Paisley the 10 month old super
pup kept everybody on their toes. And this was their first event also.
John and Marsh Magnuson in their brown and white 78 Westy came over from Spokane.
Liz and Steve Arbaugh from Kent showed with a container of wood in their 70 (
?) Mercedes sedan. Very nice ride and certainly more appropriate than an Audi!!!
(of course i am partial) Brian, Chris and Kevin showed back up and settled in.
We also had a non bus attendee: Jason from Coquitlam BC came in his 73 Ghia
with a warm sleeping bag!

Just as everyone kept asking about a mystery white vanagon the owner fessed
up and we met John Lake with his 91 GL vanagon full of toys adult and kid alike!
He drove up from Portland. And then Andrew Walls from Vancouver in his 70
Westy that he has owned i think for about 15 years.
So with Kevin cooking his pot roast over the open fire and providing theme
entertainment by carving a pumpkin for the centerpiece we all chatted, took
pictures, visited busses and did those common WW activities. Just after dark
we had our potluck. A little heavy on 'snacks' but Kevin's pot roast and
Brian's lasagna provided the "balance". Personally I think snacks go very
well with beer which was the beverage of choice, so it can't be all bad for us.
We also had homemade apple pies by Beth and warm brownies and smores by Chris
so dessert was also well covered!

After dark and dinner David Jaffe from Portland and his friend Cameron rolled
in to help polish off the table. and we recruited some other VW wanderers from
Oregon City when they drove through the park, Chris, Tory, and Sara in a 61
panel and a 71 squareback joined us for visiting and campfire.

Sunday morning came a bit faster than expected so camp tear down was
quick as we tried to get to the fairgrounds in time to get vehicle access to
our spot. Ryan Short, Susan, David, Dan, and Terry Tacker all shared 3 spaces
and attempted to take home less than we brought. I got rid of volume but it
went to Terry! So at least the roof rack went to a good home and Terry has
a way to carry river rafts around so we better all go over there and go river
rafting in Maupin!! Overall any weekend where it doesn't rain on us and we
can take money home has got to be good. So Dash point was a success and a
good choice. Certainly better than the fairgrounds!!!

Thank you Dan for being the technical host!
